You have clarity around your brand. You’re confident in your message and have identified your ideal client. Now what? In order to build your online presence and begin to attract more clients, you’ve got to implement the three C’s: connection, content and community.

Every single consumer is a publisher, broadcaster, critic and network. You have the power to influence through word of mouth – and now, word of mouse – more compellingly than ever before.

We are at a pivotal point: The entrepreneurs who will thrive are the ones who humanize their businesses and understand that relationships – and making an emotional connection – are the key to success.

The question is, are you going to take this opportunity to humanize your business and connect on an authentic, transparent level with your potential clients? Are you going to do whatever it takes to position yourself as an influencer and actually move people into action?

When you create content that your target market deems valuable, you build your credibility and establish yourself as an authority in your industry. Over time, you become the go-to resource for your ideal clients, and you grow a community around your brand.

Click on the video below to see me discuss how the paradigm has shifted and you have more opportunities than ever before to build buzz around your brand and connect with your target market by providing helpful content.

Name: Alexis Jones

Website: www.iamthatgirl.com & www.alexisjones.com

Occupation: Speaker and Founder/CEO of I Am That Girl

Twitter: @iamthatgirl

1. What are three words that best describe your personal brand?

Inspiring, authentic, and relatable.

2. Tell us why you’re awesome in two sentences or less?

If it’s true and you really are judged by the company you keep then I’m awesome because I have the most incredible family and friends any girl could dream of… then again, I’m also awesome because I won the Showcase Showdown on the Price is Right!

3. What are your three biggest indulgences?

1) Chocolate chip cookies still hot and gooey from the oven

2) Superhero movies

3) Watching college football with a burger in hand

4. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Rude people in general; but I especially can’t stand to watch entitled/ pretentious people treat any kind of staff (waiters, valet, maids, etc.) poorly, it’s unnerving to me and I always stick up for them. It’s terrible but I was never a big fan of bullies, which kind of makes me a bully to the bullies, I guess! Haha.

5. If you could have dinner with anyone (living or not) who would it be and why?

Amelia Earhart. She was my hero growing up because she was a girl on a mission, pursing her passion at all costs, defied society’s expectations for her (and all women in the 1920’s) and in doing so changed our culture and inspired a generation of women to follow suit. Not to mention, she was a phenomenal pilot, which I think is so hot, and want to be some day!

6. Why is having a powerful personal brand important to you?

It is important to me to have a respected and trusted voice as the spokesperson of my company, I Am That Girl. I also think in today’s world people are too savvy to just buy into something because it has a shiny package, people want to know what and more importantly who they are buying into. A powerful personal brand allows people to really get to know YOU and what YOU stand for; and I believe the most successful companies have an equally successful personal brand attached that personifies their companies vision and values.

7. What is your #1 marketing tip for fellow female entrepreneurs?

Live it, breath it, be it. You have to be authentic to your brand, it’s the most important aspect of your company. People will support, invest, endorse YOU if they think you’re company’s pursuit is sincere and transparent. So create something that personifies YOU!

One of the most common complaints I hear from clients is their anxiety around what to say on Twitter and other social media channels, expletives occasionally included.

They see other people talking and posting and they feel the tremendous momentum building around these conversations and would like to join in, but they are too paralyzed to do anything. They also realize that it’s a great opportunity to meet and connect with potential clients.

“I just don’t have anything interesting to share,” they tell me, or worse, “What if I make a complete fool of myself?”

What if you do?

I promise you the world won’t cave in, tomorrow will come and you’ll still be here.

In all seriousness, it’s not that serious. This is a conversation, my friend, and you’re invited to jump in anytime. Personally, I have found Twitter to be one of the friendliest water coolers on earth. And, it’s a great place to get known, build credibility and attract clients.

It will, however, benefit you tremendously to have a strategy in place for your brand before you jump in head first. Here are five steps to get you on the right track

1. Find Your Posse – Twitter has an excellent search feature. Use this box to find friends and other like-minded individuals to follow. If you’re a Business Coach living in New York who loves yoga and theatre, you might search terms like: business coach, entrepreneur, start-ups, New York City, yoga, theatre, Broadway, etc. The point is to find others in your industry, potential clients, as well as people that share some of your interests and passions.

2. Listen First – Once you’re following others in your industry and people you’re interested in, start watching their Twitter streams. What are they talking about? What information are they sharing? This will give you some ideas for your own content and you’ll get a feel for how people are using the medium. Just watch and listen for now.

3. Create Your Content Categories – This step is key to what you’ll be posting. What do you want to be known for? What are your passions? Make a list of these things and then decide what you most want to talk about. For example, if you are an acupuncturist living in Los Angeles who specializes in women’s health and loves surfing, cooking and traveling, your categories might be: acupuncture, empowering women, healthy recipes, being healthy in LA, surfing and your personal travels. You will share information from each of these content categories on a regular basis. And people who share these interests will want to learn more from you and share with their followers!

4. Give to Receive – Instead of focusing on how many Followers you have, spend your time retweeting (RT) others and sharing their information. Look for opportunities to connect people and highlight their successes. Trust me, this will give you plenty to tweet about. And you won’t have to worry about your Followers count for long.

5. Be Yourself – the Twitter community has a pretty strong asshole radar. If all you’re doing is broadcasting information, pitching your products and services and copying others, you’ll find yourself blacklisted rather quickly. Don’t just talk about your work – share your interests and passions, too. As my lovely friend Britt Michaelian says, “Whatever that thing is that sets you apart from others in real life – is the same thing that will make you stand out in social media. It’s your secret sauce.” Let us see the real you.

Knowing what to say on Twitter is pretty simple, really. Just follow your posse, watch and listen for a bit, create your content categories and give as much interesting, helpful information as possible. Focus on connecting others and highlighting how fabulous THEY are, and finally and most important, just be yourself. Let us see your personality.

Nobody can do it exactly like you.

I have four!

1) I love to write. Sometimes I’ll write six sentences when asked for two. (see #2)

2) Long long conversations sometimes instead of needed sleep

3) Shopping for cool wallets and lipsticks

4) One word. Nutella.

4. What is your biggest pet peeve?

People clicking their pen and being unconscious about doing it. And italics.

5. If you could have dinner with anyone (living or not) who would it be and why?

The 10 year old version of myself. Reassure her…it is going to be OK. You are going to be OK.

6. Why is having a powerful personal brand important to you?

It clarifies my getting out of bed. It focuses me. It helps people grasp my complexity.

7. What is your #1 marketing tip for fellow female entrepreneurs?

Be YOURSELF. If you are into hats from the 20’s, be that. Be the closest you can be to your bones. More joy and more wind comes in the wings of those who live in congruence with who they are. Indulgences and all.

1. What are three words that best describe your personal brand?

Classy. Sexy. Rock Star. Fun! (….I couldn’t resist the extra word. )

2. Tell us why you’re awesome in two sentences or less?

I am awesome because I believe YOU are awesome. And I hold you to that awesomeness, no matter what…..even when you can’t hold that for yourself.

3. What are your three biggest indulgences?

1) Liz Lively Gluten-Free Chocolate Fudge Cookies

2) US Magazine

3) Bravo’s Millionaire Matchmaker and Top Chef

4. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Close-minded-ness. Yuck.

5. If you could have dinner with anyone (living or not) who would it be and why?

OPRAH, baby! She’s a woman who has changed the world by sharing the message that living your best life is not only possible, but also your divine right and responsibility. Plus, she seems like a hell of a lot of fun.

6. Why is having a powerful personal brand important to you?

My business partner Stacey and I believe that there is a place where you and you alone SHINE. We call it your Spotlight…it’s not about ego, it’s about the place where money, passion and service meet. It’s about the place where you become the greatest version of yourself. There is no one in the world who can fill your spotlight…that’s a sacred place reserved only for you. Building your own business is the universe’s way of asking you to step fully forward into your spotlight, and once you do, you become the mirror for every single one of your clients that reflects their own greatness.

7. What is your #1 marketing tip for fellow female entrepreneurs?

Resist the urge to hide out. Share yourself, your personality, your pictures, your family, your friends and your LIFE with your tribe. The more your audience gets to know the REAL you, warts and all, the more they fall in love with you and invest eagerly in your awesome products and services.

1. What are three words that best describe your personal brand?

Frisky, Mindful, Focused

2. Tell us why you’re awesome in two sentences or less?

I have an insatiable curiosity about these amazing machines we move around in all day; there is simply nothing as sophisticated or elegant as the human body. I’m continually seeking information, education and knowledge to help me provide a more delectable service to my fabulous clients.

3. What are your three biggest indulgences?

1) Product “research”

2) Books

3) Mornings at my house

4. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Lack of personal responsibility … a.k.a: whining.

5. If you could have dinner with anyone (living or not) who would it be and why?

My husband. We have so much fun but for the past several years, we’ve rarely had a spare evening to truly sit and dine together.

6. Why is having a powerful personal brand important to you?

I perform a technical trade that anyone can be trained to do. However, no one else can be me, so infusing my specialized services with my own brand of joie de vivre does more than differentiate me from others, it gives my clients certainty in their choice. In our kooky world, that is priceless.

7. What is your #1 marketing tip for fellow female entrepreneurs?

Take care of most important asset: You! It is imperative as leaders, business owners and women that we can function at our fullest capacity. And that takes awareness of and connection with our body, minds and soul. Mitigating stress, getting the right amount of sleep for our bodies at this time in our lives, fueling ourselves with colorful, fresh foods, breathing deeply, drinking oodles of water and carving out bits of downtime (dare I say meditation?), laughing with friends … we know these factors enhance our lives and I want to encourage every luscious babe out there to move these to the top of their to do list.

You read correctly. It’s not about you, it’s about THEM. The people who come to your website, consume your information, interact with you on social media platforms and potentially purchase your products and services.

Everything that you create in your business should be about THEM, not YOU.

Their problems, their dreams, their aspirations. When you tap into this, I promise you, you will be successful. You’ve got to understand who you’re talking to.

Yet many people still make the mistake of marketing to everyone and anyone. It’s like trying to hit a bullseye with a machine gun. You might shoot a lot of bullets, but the chances of actually hitting your target are pretty slim. On the other hand, become proficient with a bow and arrow and you’re much more likely to hit your target over and over again.

Before you can effectively sell your products and services, you must zero in on the exact people who are going to be most interested in what you have to offer. You also need to get inside their heads and understand what’s keeping them up at night. What are their toughest challenges? What are they struggling with right now?

In other words, what are their “pain points?” There’s a reason that pain killers outsell vitamins ten to one. People will do anything and pay almost anything to eliminate the pain they are feeling. When you position your products and services as the solution to the exact problems your ideal clients are experiencing, and you help clients to eliminate their pain, you will attract more of your ideal clients in droves.

Just remember, when you are struggling with what to write in your next blog post or what to offer in your newest service package, it’s about THEM, not you. Answer your clients’ questions, solve their problems and make their lives easier.

Here’s a tip: create a three question survey and send it to your list, or just past and current clients. Your three simple questions should be something like this:

1. What are you struggling with right now?

2. If you could wave a magic wand and change three things in your life right now, what would they be?

3. How can I best serve you?

Ask THEM what they need, deliver it, and you’ll be well on your way to a thriving business.

1. What are three words that best describe your personal brand?

Confident, Empowered, Compassionate

2. Tell us why you’re awesome in two sentences or less?

I’m awesome because I want to live life to the fullest, get lost in the deliciousness of moments, and teach others how to do the same. I collect stories and am most interested and inspired by someone who has the courage to share their truth.

3. What are your three biggest indulgences?

Ooo. That’s a good question.

1) My S Factor class. This is one pleasure-filled indulgence I allow myself each week. Two hours of pure yumminess devoted to me and my body!

2) French Toast at Cici’s Café in Tarzana. OMG!

3) Sundays. I usually take at least one day off a week to slow down, unplug & honor myself. My last perfect Sunday was a hike, breakfast (at Cici’s!), farmer’s market, lounging by the pool, reading a book and going to see a movie. Now that was a day of indulgence! We all deserve at least one day a week!

4. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Closed-minded and closed-hearted people.

5. If you could have dinner with anyone (living or not) who would it be and why?

I’m torn on this one. I’m going to cheat and give one living and one not…

Not living would be my amazing Grandpa, Martin Brooks Nichols. I would like to see him, hug him and laugh with him again. He taught me the most about Love. Extra-Ordinary Love. I would really like to tell him that.

Living would be Oprah. I feel like that’s so cliché, but it’s true. She is a complete and total inspiration. A woman who beat the odds and changed / continues to change the world. She walks the walk and leads by example. Her authenticity, compassion, drive, success and desire to contribute to the greater good has greatly influenced my own life and that’s why I’d love to sit down with her.

6. Why is having a powerful personal brand important to you?

A powerful personal brand allows me to get my message out to the world. My mission truly is to empower women and the bodyheart brand is a big part of how that mission gets delivered. A powerful, clear personal brand creates instant credibility and a desire for others to want to know more about you.

7. What is your #1 marketing tip for fellow female entrepreneurs?

My #1 marketing tip is to share your truth and experience. Sharing your story is the best way for people to connect with you and get to know you. This is particularly important if you are in a service-based industry. If you’ve overcome a challenging experience and they are in the midst of the same challenge, you can be a light of hope for them.

Solve their problem. Make their life better. Focus on what they need. That’s my best advice.
